What Is Naturopathic Medicine: A Modern Approach Rooted In Nature
By Dr. Kate Sage
When people ask what naturopathic medicine really is, I often say it’s about working with the body instead of against it.
At its core, naturopathic medicine blends traditional healing practices with modern science, all with the goal of supporting the body’s natural ability to heal—when it’s given the right tools and the right environment.
Instead of just chasing or suppressing symptoms, we spend time asking a different question: why is this happening in the first place? When we can identify and address the underlying imbalances, we’re not only helping you feel better now, we’re also supporting your long-term health, resilience, and overall well-being.
One of the guiding principles of naturopathic medicine is something called “the healing power of nature.” It’s the idea that your body already has an incredible capacity to heal. My role, as a naturopathic doctor, is to support and strengthen that process. That might look like personalized nutrition, lifestyle support, herbal medicine, or targeted supplements and, when it’s appropriate, prescription medications as well. It’s not about choosing one path over another, but about using the right tools at the right time for you.
In practice, that means pulling from a wide range of therapies and meeting you where you are. We often start with the least invasive options and build from there, always keeping your goals, your preferences, and your unique physiology in mind. Naturopathic care isn’t meant to replace conventional medicine—it’s meant to work alongside it in a thoughtful and integrated way.
Another piece that feels really important to mention is the experience itself. Visits are typically longer, and we take the time to really listen and understand the full picture. Patients often tell me they feel heard, respected, and more involved in their care—and that partnership can make a huge difference in how people heal and move forward.
At the end of the day, naturopathic medicine is about creating a sustainable, realistic path to health. It’s about giving you the tools, knowledge, and support to feel more in control of your well-being, while honoring that health isn’t one-size-fits-all.
It’s a way of practicing medicine that’s both practical and deeply human—and one that I’m continually grateful to be a part of.
